ISS UK and Ireland confirms new Net-Zero commitment for 2030

ISS UK and Ireland is delighted to announce its new Net-Zero strategy to achieve challenging carbon emission reduction targets in line with our science-based targets (SBT) commitment across ISS/AS. These goals are to: reach Net-Zero for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030; and identify and measure scope 3 emissions by 2022.

In the lead up to the G7 summit, and with the new strategy in place, ISS will demonstrate that the journey to a low carbon future is within reach of all organisations – for both ISS and to support our customers’ journeys on their own transitions to Net-Zero.

Liz Benison, CEO, ISS UK & Ireland stated: “At ISS in the UK & Ireland, we have made great progress in delivering energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions both for our own organisation and for our customers. We in facilities management must however lead by example and do more. Therefore, to achieve Net-Zero for our own emissions is our next responsible action and is aligned with the global strategy for ISS worldwide. The future is in our hands as we continue to connect people with places to make the world work better.”

ISS UK & Ireland Scope 1 & 2 Net-Zero targets for 2030

ISS UK & Ireland anticipates achieving Net-Zero on its 2019 baseline by initiating the following key actions:

  • Company cars will be all electric or hydrogen by the end of 2025 (the new policy for UK & Ireland will be launched by Q3 2021)
  • All commercial vehicles will be electric or hydrogen by 2030
  • Review all heating/cooling/energy consuming systems in our offices in order to optimise performance and create energy saving opportunities
  • Continue procurement of renewable electricity

The Net-Zero strategy for ISS UK & Ireland will also address other actions to minimise carbon emissions and offsetting any residual emissions will be a last resort in order to achieve a Net-Zero footprint.

The Net-Zero future

ISS UK & Ireland has begun the identification and measurement of scope 3 emissions and are committed to establishing a baseline for all categories by 2022. With this in place, ISS can set further action plans, reduction targets and align targets at a global level to ensure we reach our goal as a global organisation.

Tim Proctor, Director of Health, Safety, Environment, Quality & Corporate Responsibility UK & Ireland, ISS UK, stated, “Sustainable service performance is a core pillar of our corporate responsibly strategy at ISS UK & Ireland. By launching our own Net Zero Strategy around the G7 Summit and World Environment Day 2021, we are making a clear statement on our position to create a strategy that supports the world we live in. And in doing so, share the ambitious targets and bold actions on climate change expected of us by all of our stakeholders - from our customers & investors though to our communities.”

Jamie Hall, UK Director of Energy & Sustainability, ISS Sustainability concluded, "It’s an exciting time at ISS for many reasons but when it comes to sustainability, there are two fantastic opportunities to focus on. Firstly, we are proud of our own ESG strategy and these commitments that reduce our businesses impact on the planet, whilst delivering value to our people and the communities we serve.  Secondly, ISS UK & Ireland recently named sustainability as a core service for the first time. Our subject matter expertise allows us to support clients with end-to-end sustainability services, from establishing ESG strategies, through to delivering the solutions required to achieve their ambitions”.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling companies to set science-based emissions reduction targets; at ISS, we support clients in both the private and public sector in their commitment to SBTi. The ISS Group global commitment to SBTi is outlined in the ISS Group CR Report 2020 here, whilst further details of the ISS UK & Ireland targets can be found in the CR Report for 2020 here.
