When choosing a facility services provider you need to know it can meet your needs, not just in the coming months, but for years to come. From our humble beginnings in Denmark to becoming one of the world's largest employers, ISS has the strength to stay right by your side.

1901: ISS launches in Copenhagen, Denmark, as a small security company with 20 night watchmen, entitled Kjøbenhavn-Frederiksberg Nattevagt (Copenhagen-Frederiksberg Night Watch).

1934: ISS enters the cleaning business, establishing Det Danske Rengørings Selskab A/S (The Danish Cleaning Company) as an independent subsidiary of the security company.

1946: ISS expands outside Denmark for the first time by establishing a Swedish subsidiary.

1968: The company enters the UK and adopts the ISS name.

1973: The company expands overseas.

1975: Group revenue reaches DKK 1 billion.

1977: ISS shares are listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange.

1989: The total number of employees in the group reaches 100,000.

1997: ISS launches its 'aim2002' strategy, focusing on Multi Services – providing a number of services to individual customers.

1999: In the group's biggest acquisition totalling DKK 3.6 billion, ISS acquires Abilis: the second-largest European provider of cleaning and specialised services. In 1998, Abilis employed around 50,000 employees and achieved annual revenues of DKK 5.2 billion. The total number of employees in the group reaches 200,000.

2000: ISS launches its new five-year strategy - 'create2005' - which introduces the Facility Services concept.

2003: ISS signs its first major pan-European Integrated Facility Services contract.

2005: The group introduces a new strategy that aims to transform ISS into an Integrated Facility Services company. ISS A/S is acquired by funds advised by EQT Partners and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, and de-listed from the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. The total number of employees in the Group reaches 300,000.

2006: Group revenue passes DKK 50 billion. ISS makes the second-largest acquisition in its history, acquiring the outstanding 51% of shares in Tempo Services Ltd in Australia.

2007: Group revenue passes DKK 60 billion. ISS enters the US market by acquiring Sanitors Inc. The total number of employees in the group reaches 400,000.

2008: ISS introduces its strategy plan - 'The ISS Way'. The strategy is built on four strategic cornerstones: customer focus, people management, the IFS strategy and a multi-local approach. ISS signs its largest-ever international Integrated Facility Services contract.

2010: Group revenue passes DKK 70 billion. The total number of employees in the group reaches 500,000.

2014: GREAT - A new roadmap. A large part of the ISS WAY strategy has been implemented, but in order to further accelerate implementation, GREAT was introduced in 2014. Jeff Gravenhorst, who took over as the Group CEO in April 2010, has been at the helm of ISS since then, driving the strategy and taking ISS towards the  ambitious vision of becoming the world’s greatest service organisation.

2017: Continuing forward. ISS continues working towards its ambitious vision - becoming the world's greatest service organisation. For the 5th year in a row, ISS has been recognised by the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP) with getting a full five stars rating. In April, ISS acquired a leading food services company in the US - Guckenheimer. Furthermore, ISS acquired SIGNAL - a strategic workplace management and design company. With a focus on innovation, ISS also launched Corporate Garage - an innovative and autonomous unit living outside of ISS aiming to unleash the innovation power of the company.
