'A journey into FM'

FM-journey-464
A panel of ISS key figures talk about their adventures into FM

The venue: ISS South Quay office, 14th August

The question: How did you get into FM?

The panel:

  •  Philip Leigh – ISS COO
  • Greg Daniel – Account Director
  • Rosalind Ford – Account Director
  • Sophie Leigh – Deputy Account Director
  • The host: Simon Jacobs, Head of Communications & Marketing

The session, attended by over 40 employees was an interesting discussion where the ISS Senior Leaders talked about their experience, careers and journeys, describing how they got to where they are today.

With over 50 years FM experience combined, the panel were positioned according to their years within FM, with Ros having 2.5 years, Sophie with 5 years, Greg with 21, and Philip having over 21 years.

Greg Daniel talked about leaving school to complete an apprenticeship as an electrician, returning to formal education later in his career to gain an undergraduate and Masters degree. Previous to ISS Greg had roles in engineering consultancy, quantity surveying, and at Serco, joining ISS as an Account Director on the UBS contract before moving to his current position.

Sophie Leigh’s journey, on the other hand, was driven through her formal education, working for ISS in France as part of her study abroad programme for her undergraduate degree. That is where she began to understand who ISS was, and consequently joined the ISS Graduate Programme after her studies. Sophie was promoted to be Account Manager on one of our financial services contract before moving another contract as Deputy Account Director.

Philip has had a number of senior positions in ISS, starting his current role as COO of the public sector business in 2014. He talked about how he motivates his team of 12,000 employees, explaining that people need different reasons for doing things, ‘I want to influence how others are feeling, I want people to enjoy what they do’.

The talk ended with a discussion about the skills they have gained, and the attributes they value in the people around them. Ros spoke about how she values those who have a ‘nothing is beneath you’ attitude, that show respect to all colleagues, and remain resilient when things get tough. Philip concluded the session by reminding the audience to stay humble and most importantly, to have fun on the way!

The overarching take-aways from the evening were:

  • The Panel shared a common core value: that the FM industry demonstrates how people can influence the outcome and output of service and that the investment in the growth of people every day would directly move ISS one step closer to being ‘The World's Greatest Service Organisation’
  • The Panel shared a few keywords that would enable all of us to strive within the FM industry which include; ‘Be Resilient, Humble, Respectful and learn how to take a step back when faced with challenges’
  • The Panel illustrated collectively that the reasons for joining ISS and remaining a long-serving employee is that we have embedded a great supportive network and aim to develop and nurture growth across the business. Everyone agreed that we all make mistakes, but we must learn from them and continue to develop relevant skills required towards delivering an excellent service but most importantly understanding that it is "People" that make ISS a great company to work

Thanks to Catherine McCarthy for a fantastic summary of the event!
