Craig Smith becomes Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) chair

craig-smith-464
On Friday 12th April 2019, Craig Smith took the helm of the Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) as national chairman
Currently HCA vice chair, Smith (pictured), is a long-standing member of the HCA and has more than 40 years’ experience working with the NHS.

He holds the position of head of corporate affairs at ISS Facility Services, the global facilities services company, having started his career in healthcare in 1979 as an assistant catering manager at the Lister Hospital Stevenage.

He retains a strong interest in hospital catering and joined the HCA in 1980 and was one of the first contractor members. He succeeds Stewart McKenzie, who has been national chair since April 2017 and a new vice chair was announced following the HCA’s AGM on Friday 12th April 2019.

Smith’s priorities include promoting the importance of the HCA’s nutritional and hydration issue-based campaigns, including the ‘Power of 3’ and the ‘Last 9 Yards’ initiatives and nutrition and hydration 24/7 365 awareness campaign.

Craig Smith comments:
“Stewart has been an absolute inspiration. The collaborations the HCA have already formed make us collectively stronger, and it’s important we continue this approach in order to have more influence on catering services in the NHS and broader platforms.

Everything we do is about the patients in our care. I hope to build upon Stewart’s achievements and continue to drive the HCA’s core messages around patient-centred care.

My approach as vice chair has been to support Stewart’s modernising initiatives. This includes working together to create a strategy document whereby members have clear visibility around our aims and objectives.”

Stewart McKenzie said:
“During my term with Craig as vice chair, I have seen his passion, drive and commitment to the HCA. I believe he will lead the HCA with much solidity and integrity. As a well-respected individual in the catering industry, it is an honour to pass chairmanship to him.”

Smith is looking to expand the HCA’s membership by at least 25 percent during his term as national chair, whilst promoting the association as an influential trade organisation within the public sector.
