Celebrating International Women's Day 2019

iwd-464x207a
ISS was delighted to join this year’s #BalanceforBetter campaign to recognise and celebrate the achievements of women across the globe and to call for a more balanced world in relation to gender equality and inclusivity

More employees than ever supported the International Women’s Day (IWD) campaign in ISS this year, organising initiatives on site, sharing their thoughts and blogs on gender balance, baking cakes, snapping their #BalanceforBetter poses for the selfie challenge and pledging to take action to:

  • challenge stereotype and bias
  • forge positive visibility of women
  • influence the beliefs and actions of others
  • celebrate women’s achievements

#BalanceforBetter customer event

The Financial Services and Retail sector celebrated International Women’s Day together with clients and inspirational figures from across ISS who each gave a presentation to the audience across lunch and networking.

Richard Johnston, MD of the Financial Services and Retail sector, opened the afternoon, expressing the need to "fast-track gender balance" and reinforcing that this is "not just a woman’s issue". It is the responsibility of everyone, especially businesses, to take the lead to support equality and the promotion of women, clarifying "it’s not about the downfall of men!" Richard introduced four women from ISS to speak about their varied journeys in life and business. All four speakers, who are at different stages of their career with ISS, shared their inspirational stories with the audience:

Stephanie Hamilton, Director of People and Culture, told the audience "you can’t be what you can’t see" as she talked about gender stereotypes and our role to challenge these to paint a balanced picture to the next generation. Roles should be challenged, opportunities shared and assumptions shouldn’t be made. Stephanie is a leading figure in ISS, embracing equality and diversity and driving the agenda for positive change.

Ellen Potts, Global Management Trainee supporting Financial Services, shared her experience of ISS so far and the opportunity and investment in people that she has seen and appreciated across the business, praising ISS and inspirational colleagues for providing encouragement and belief in her achievements. Ellen told of her experience in leaving university and entering the world of work.

Senior Commercial Manager, Nithya Gopalakrishnan, remembered the inspirational women who had an impact on her life and attitude to business, which started in the automotive industry in India. Talking about how pressure made her stronger, Nithya thanked both men and women for their support in helping her to excel in her career and at home.

Account Director, Sinead Mackenzie, talked about her experiences in many different environments from being a Troup Commander in Iraq, to a diverse life in FM and the art of juggling work and family life. Sinead talked about her genuine excitement about working with ISS, being empowered to build her team and the culture within it and the care for people ‘feeling real’.

The day was concluded by Matthew Brabin, CEO, ISS UK and Ireland, who said that "ISS was striving to create a truly diverse and inclusive organisation, specifically in its objective to attract, retain and nurture our female talent." Matthew congratulated the speakers for their honesty and passion and expressed his desire to further accelerate the gender balance, both in the boardroom and indeed throughout the whole organisation.

Supporting Woman’s Aid with our healthcare partner

It was also fantastic to hear about the ISS team, in conjunction with the client on one of our client sites, who used IWD to launch three weeks of support for their local woman's aid. The whole team took part, encouraging everyone to donate cash and goodies including Easter Eggs and toiletries for a great cause.

At ISS, our agenda focuses on a balanced approach to business and our ThinkForward@ISS initiative confirms that this focus is embedded into our core behaviours and warrants our ability to work within balanced teams, which is critical to our success.
