Connect for inclusion

National Inclusion Week
To celebrate National Inclusion Week, taking place from 25th September to 1st October, ISS’ monthly diversity diary, written by our Diversity and Employment Law specialist, Nicky Sidall-Collier, has ‘Connect for Inclusion’ as this month’s theme.

“Equality, Diversity and Inclusion impacts on every area of our life, not least our working life, so I feel really privileged to have been asked to write a diary on a diversity topic each month that will engage, support and start conversations” explained Nicky.

“Difference enriches our lives and generates new perspectives and ideas, so my challenge to colleagues this month is to connect with others, to have a conversation with someone in the office or at the site where they work that they don’t normally engage with. Sit with a different group at lunchtime, ask a member of their client’s staff to go for a coffee and broaden their connections.”

Nicky explained how she has been careful to take up her own challenge too, taking time out to introduce herself to a colleague in the office she had never spoken to. “I was really excited to connect with this colleague whom I’ve never met despite the fact that he’s worked for ISS for a couple of years,  because I was getting to indulge my interest in history and religion as well as diversity”

Nicky really enjoyed learning about her colleague's bond with his Bangladeshi-born father who made an amazing contribution to his Essex home-town, fundraising for charities and arranging for a derelict building to be converted for use as a mosque.

“I can honestly say, it was one of the most entertaining couple of hours that I’ve had at work in the last couple of months- we both really enjoyed chatting" Nicky commented.

So what are you waiting for? Why not step out of your familiar daily networks and meet someone who may offer you a new and valuable perspective?
