ISS supports long-awaited reopening of Gatwick’s South Terminal

After a nearly two-year closure during the pandemic, Gatwick Airport, supported closely by ISS, has reopened their South Terminal to the public.

Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal has been deep-cleaned and staffed by ISS, ready for the reopening that will support the anticipated spike in summer travel. Flights from the airport have been operating solely from the North Terminal since 15 June 2020 and ISS’s placemakers have been keeping the terminal operational and safe for passengers to use throughout the pandemic.

As the furlough period ended, Gatwick Airport in collaboration with ISS, agreed to retain all employees to begin the preparation for the reopening of the South Terminal. These ISS placemakers have deep-cleaned the entire terminal, recruited and trained new employees, procured over 200 sanitiser stations, repaired or replaced all dormant machines and re-engaged specialist hygiene and scent suppliers.

As part of the mobilisation, ISS is running a bold recruitment campaign to provide the local community with exciting career opportunities at the site. There are a range of positions available – please contact the team.

ISS provides cleaning, portering and property services to Gatwick Airport, and has done for the last seven years.

Pete Coombes, Senior Passenger Operations Manager – Gatwick Airport, commented:
“Reopening the South Terminal is a major step in the recovery of both Gatwick and the wider aviation industry following nearly two years of huge reductions in air traffic and travel due to the pandemic. The ISS team have put in a herculean effort to bring the terminal up to a standard expected by the public, staff and stakeholders. I’m delighted with the way the ISS team have risen to the challenge with their usual positive attitude, even when the demand and timescales have been ever changing. The adaptability of the team has made a huge difference and we’re looking forward to the busy summer ahead.”

Keith Middleton, Managing Director – Infrastructure, ISS UK & Ireland, said:
“The remobilisation of Gatwick’s South Terminal is a credit to the incredible effort made by our fantastic ISS team on site. They have put safety and high standards at the forefront of the remobilisation efforts, making sure that the terminal is safe and operational for airport staff, airline staff, passengers and the wider local community. This is a wonderful example of how ISS placemakers are supporting the world’s reopening after the coronavirus pandemic.”
