Corporate responsibility
Reinforcing local community relationships

Our scale means we are able to provide support and exposure for one national charity partner as well as supporting a wide variety of local charities in our different businesses and client accounts. Support for these charities encompasses various activities including fundraising, payroll giving, volunteering, and pro-bono services. In 2016, the total value of contribution to local communities was £536,000. We track our activities using the London Benchmarking Group approach.

We strongly believe that this support strengthens our license to operate in local communities all around the UK and Ireland and drives engagement among our employees. It also enhances our reputation in the eyes of our customers and we regularly look for opportunities to collaborate with them on fundraising or volunteering activities. For our employees working regularly on customers’ sites, we encourage them to support their charity partners as well as our own.

PT fundraising

We completed a second successful year of our partnership with The Prince’s Trust and raised £70,000 in 2016, bringing the total funds raised over the partnership to £160,000. The funds raised for The Prince’s Trust are set aside for targeted Get Into Facilities Management programmes for young people around the UK who are work-ready but do not have the skills or experience to move into employment. In 2016, we welcomed 53 young people onto the programme at our sites within Liverpool and Derby hospitals.

Key events in our fundraising calendar include our pedometer challenge in April, which raised £11,000, the Palace-to-Palace bike ride in October 2016, which raised £14,000 and our new Ice Masters Curling Cup which saw 70 employees competing in 12 teams to raise £3,000.

We encourage our different businesses and the accounts within them to partner with charities, community groups, educational bodies, hospitals and other organisations. These partnerships can range from national charities, such as Comic Relief or Help for Heroes, to local schools or hospitals. We rely on a thriving network of community champions who manage these local relationships and organise support in the form of fundraising, volunteering and a range of other activities.

Community organisations

Our employee volunteering activities generate a number of key benefits. They provide our employees with an opportunity to add to their skillset and gain a sense of personal fulfillment. They give us an opportunity to engage with and benefit local communities. Volunteering also provides a means of building relationships with our customers, by collaborating in joint initiatives and demonstrating to them that we behave in a responsible manner.

Our main corporate platform for employee volunteering is with our corporate partner, The Prince’s Trust. With The Prince’s Trust, we encourage our employees to visit their centres and participate in sessions that form part of employability programmes for 16-25 year olds. We have also been part of the LifeSkills programme since its creation by a leading UK bank in 2013. In 2016, ISS employees delivered 15 workshops and reached 542 students.
