Safety Heroes and Safety Leaders

ISS is committed to promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of all its employees. We know that identifying and controlling risks can only be effectively achieved with employer and employee co-operation and participation. As part of our approach to engagement we have an established network of safety champions in the business who step forward to:

• Act as a role model to fellow colleagues, customers, clients, contractors and external parties
• Being enthusiastic and passionate about safety
• Challenging unsafe behaviours and start safety conversations at all levels of the business while being polite and respectful

As an evolution to this programme Safety Champions we have created the roles of Safety Heroes and Safety Leaders. The Safety Heroes role allows those who wish to continue in the present
champions role to continue as Safety Heroes. The role of Safety Leader is for those who want to develop in the safety role; it provides for additional training to support personal and professional development as well as giving a nationally recognised safety qualification(IOSH Managing Safety).

This will add to the safety knowledge in the business additionally supporting inspections, toolbox talks and investigations. The safety leaders role provides an insight and opportunity to those who wish to become safety professionals.

“We have put a lot of effort into re-focusing the business on the importance of Health & Safety and have come up with an innovative approach with the development of our Safety Hero and Safety Leader initiative which has been designed to increase employee engagement and encourage the reporting of near hits and other hazards. As the initiative continues to grow momentum we expect to see a big change in our safety performance and the further development of our safety culture."

Tim Proctor, Director of HSEQ and CR
