Health and wellbeing

Keeping our own employees safe
The health and safety of our people is an essential focus area for us. We continue our rigorous efforts to improve our safety performance and to create a strong and vibrant safety culture. Effective risk management starts with a commitment to health and safety from our Executive Board and the Managing Directors of our different businesses. Among other key performance indicators, we continuously track the frequency and severity of accidents and have also embedded Lost Time Injury Frequency as a part of the bonus scheme for our senior leaders.

Supporting health and wellbeing among our own employees
We care strongly about our own employee's wellbeing and it is at the forefront of our new People and Culture policy. We are developing our employee health and wellbeing activities across the business which build on our current initiatives.

Supporting healthier workplaces for our customers
As facilities management providers we can play an important role in these efforts and support our customers' wellbeing strategies.  We are currently having our greatest impact through our catering services and the provision of healthy and nutritious food options to our customers’ employees.

In the private sector, our catering teams working in customers’ offices and other sites launched our Eat Lean range in 2016. Consisting of a suite of over 200 nutritionally balanced recipes that are supported by clear marketing and messaging to help our customers’ employees select them, the Eat Lean range includes power eggs for breakfast, breadless sandwiches, wraps under 500 calories and snack pots.
Our catering teams have been taking steps to improve the health and nutrition aspects of school breakfasts and lunches for a number of years through accreditation to the Soil Association’s Food for Life catering marks. “Making healthy eating easy” is a core element of this mark that has strict requirements on reducing fats and salts in meals from the Bronze standard through to the Gold standard.
The NHS Commission for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) has set clear goals to improve the health of food and drink offered to employees at hospitals and other sites. ISS took steps to exceed these requirements ahead of time. Our contract with The Walton Centre, Liverpool was selected by NHS England to be one of their ‘official’ trial sites demonstrating that we are at the forefront of helping the achievement of NHS goals.
