Celebrating diversity, dignity and inclusion at ISS UK

‘There is one simple fact about ISS…our people matter the most’…that is the bold opening statement of our People and Culture Policy which commits to creating an environment where everyone can be happy and reach their potential at ISS.
Not only do ISS believe that all employees should be treated fairly, equally and with respect. We want an inclusive culture where the diversity of our wonderful workforce is celebrated.

ISS UK is a great team because of 44,000+ amazing employees from a variety of backgrounds and ages. We all bring our collective experience to deliver great services that make a difference to our culture, customers and communities.

When an ISS employee comes to work, we want them to feel supported and comfortable enough to be open and honest about who they are. We need to remove barriers and to enable people to be be visible role models and ambassadors. It is something which the senior leadership team of ISS believes in and our Diversity, Dignity and Inclusion Policy sets out our intentions.

The benefits for our business of ensuring our culture is inclusive and diverse will be:

It is the right thing to do and in line with our values of Honesty (we respect) and Responsibility (we care). It is behaviour in line with our values that we want to encourage and trailblaze; we want every ISS employee to live by our values and be the visionary organisation that we aspire to be
Open recruitment policies ensure we have the widest pool of talent to recruit from
Increased employee motivation, satisfaction, engagement and retention
Open working relationships with our customers
Improved reputation and innovation
In-tune thinking with the Millennial generation (those born in the 1980s) who are our employees, customers and senior leaders of the future
Legal compliance with the Equality Act 2010

We believe that if every employee is able to be open and honest, it will support an inclusive working environment by:

Eliminating the need to hide or mislead others
Breaking down barriers to understanding
Building trusting working relationships and making deeper friendships possible
Making employees more productive
Benefiting individuals who can be themselves at work and be seen as leaders or ambassadors

On 17th May 2017, in support of International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHO) and World FM Day which was themed around 'Enabling positive experiences', we took our first collective step to drive Diversity and Inclusiveness at ISS UK and Ireland.  We held by holding a pledge signing day where colleagues across ISS and client sites were encouraged to sign a board to state their support for creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can 'bring their whole selves to work'.

In January 2017, the ISS UK and Ireland Board approved our diversity strategy and in April 2017 they approved our Diversity, Dignity and Inclusion Policy.

An ISS Diversity and Inclusion working party is being established  to set out the plans for future inclusion initiatives such as:

The development of inclusivity networks
Providing unconscious bias training
Embedding Inclusive Leadership into our business
Partnering with Stonewall and other campaigning charities
Extending our Diversity and Inclusion training programmes

In 2016 ISS UK and Ireland joined the Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion (ENEI) which is the UK’s leading employer network covering all aspects of equality and inclusion in the workplace.

ENEI support employers in creating inclusive workplaces, they influence Government, business and trade unions and campaign for real practical change.

ISS UK and Ireland also joined the FM Services LGBT Network of Networks in 2016 to share best practice and engage in joint campaigns and initiatives with our LGBT+ industry colleagues.

We have exciting times ahead of us and if you want to be involved or find out more, please get in touch with us: GreatPeople@uk.issworld.com.

ISS CEO Jeff Gravenhorst signs the diversity pledge board at the ISS UK HQ at the official building opening on 2nd June 2017.
