Our Services

Aberdeen City Council

Aberdeen City Council / Local Authority - ISS

Client: Aberdeen City Council
Contract Period: 2010 to date

ISS has been working in partnership with Aberdeen City since 2010. The contract was awarded as a result of competitive tendering on both price and quality, offering a significant saving whilst still providing a higher specification; a promise that continues to be delivered.

Works Carried Out

The contract is for the provision of high specification grounds maintenance services to 21 outdoor sports facilities, including four 18-hole golf courses, two nine-hole golf courses, numerous playing fields, 12 bowling greens, five football grounds, three cricket grounds, putting greens and five tennis courts;  the amenity areas of nine indoor sports facilities; and five housing amenity areas.  Golf courses, maintained by highly qualified greenkeepers, include the championship Premier No. 1 course at Hazelhead, designed by Alistair McKenzie, the golf architect best known for Augusta National in America.

Services, based on an output specification contract, include the maintenance of golf courses, sports grounds, general amenity areas, shrub borders, roses, bedding areas, grass banks, hedges, tree inspections, hard standing areas, paths, roads, car parks and drains.  Litter collection and emptying litter bins is also undertaken.

Project Conclusion

Sustainable Innovation

  • ISS supports Aberdeen City’s Community Plan fostering social inclusion, sustainable development and jobs and prosperity by increasing participation and commitment.  In partnership with the Lifeskills Group, ISS has provided placements for eight trainees, who received full inductions together with health and safety, light machinery and green keeping training.  All placements have been subject to on-site assessment and where suitable, retained by ISS for seasonal work.

Partnership Investment

  • Since mobilisation, a capital expenditure of £1 million has been invested in new tools and specialist machinery.  This is part of ISS’s multi-million pound programme of investment in top of the range machinery, which underpins their commitment to providing clients with a reliable and effective service.  ISS has a national network of workshops staffed by qualified mechanics to ensure equipment is well maintained and always in working order.
  • In conjunction with Sport Aberdeen, ISS has formed a real partnership to ensure high quality, well managed sports facilities in Aberdeen and to develop the services efficiently.

Added Value

  • Using careful value engineering during contract negotiation in areas such as management and staff working patterns, ISS reduced overheads by 3%.  The transfer sickness rate of 10% has also been significantly reduced and accountability now sits with the staff giving them full ownership of the contract.

Client Testimonial

"We have found ISS very responsive to the operational changes we have made.  It has been a good partner in making progress to improve the quality of the City's sports facilities."
