Education / Case Studies - ISS

Client: Hampshire County Council
Contract Period: 2007 to date

ISS was awarded the schools contract with Hampshire County Council as a result of competitive tendering on both price and quality, fulfilling the Council’s outcome of best value together with service excellence. Since then the original four-year contract has been re-negotiated extending the term for an additional three years.

Works Carried Out

The contract is for the provision of grounds maintenance services to the sports facilities and amenity areas of 65 secondary, junior, primary, nursery and special needs schools in North Hampshire.

Services delivered include grass cutting, shrub bed maintenance, hedge cutting, leaf clearing, weed control, maintenance and marking of sports facilities including football pitches, maintenance of long jump pits and natural habitat maintenance.

Safety is always top of the agenda at ISS and working on sites with vulnerable children demands special precautions and attention. All ISS staff are in possession of enhanced CRB statuses and carry identity cards. Operatives remain sensitive to the movement of the children around the sites, with machinery operation not being permitted while children are en-route to classes, playing or receiving outdoor education.

Project Conclusion

Partnership Investment

  • Investment to the contract has included new „fit for purpose‟ equipment such as push mowers, strimmers and hand tools. This is part of ISS‟s multi-million pound programme of investment in top of the range machinery, which underpins our commitment to providing our clients with a reliable and effective service.

Sustainable Innovation

  • ISS is working in partnership with local organisations such as Job Centre Plus to improve social sustainability in the area. Employees from the local community are taken on for both seasonal and permanent positions which includes full basic grounds maintenance training. Employees are subject to full inductions together with health and safety, light machinery and horticultural training.
  • These employees will also be subject to ISS‟s in-house Lantra-Approved Practical Skills Award scheme which will give them a genuine externally assessed award. ISS is the first and only company to deliver this type of training in-house.

Added Value

  • Extra works to the contract have included laying concrete shed bases, the complete re-levelling and re-surfacing of a football pitch, fencing, and tree works.

Environmental Initiatives

  • An on-site composting scheme is used, saving on the financial and environmental cost of transportation as well as providing a source of mulch to the site.

Client Testimonial

"What impresses me most with ISS is not only the quality of the work undertaken, but more importantly their ability to respond quickly to changes in the work schedules, especially due to school sports days or bad weather."
